Figure 2 Schematic diagram of pathological mechanism in DR. The main molecular mechanisms involved in DR pathogenesis are the PKC pathway, polyol pathway, and hexosamine pathway. The occurrence and development of DR can involve increased inflammatory/oxidative stress and impairment of the renin-angiotensin system, respectively.
