High serum procalcitonin concentration in Kawasaki disease

Abstract
We studied 6-year-old girl admitted to hospital with obvious signs of Kawasaki disease (KD). Serum tests revealed moderately elevated procalcitonin (PCT) concentration. The highest level - 7.2 ng/ml (normal value < 0.5 ng/ml) was detected on the day of admission and subsequently decreased to the normal ranges parallel to decrease of C-reactive protein level. Since PCT is induced mainly by bacterial toxins, elevated PCT level in KD suggests that bacterial toxins may be involved in the aetiology.
