Abstract
The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between magnesium concentrations in the myometrium and the nature of uterine contractions during labour. The study was included 57 pregnant and parturient women. Uterines contractility was recorded by cardiotocography; magnesium ion concentrations in uterine samples taken during caesarean operation were determined according to atomic absorption spectrophotometry methodology (SAA). In those women who had evidence of uterine activity, the mean magnesium concentration in samples taken during caesarean operation was 94.46 µg/g. This was lower than the magnesium concentrations from myometria without evidence of labour activity (104.52 µg/g). The difference was not statistically significant (p=0.13). We did not find a correlation between magnesium concentrations in myometrium and the contractile activity of the uterus during labour.
