Diagnosis of the thyroid nodules in children by fine-needle aspiration biopsy

Abstract
The fine-needle aspiration biopsy and cytological examination of thyroid gland tumours in 164 patient aged 8 to 18 years (mean 12.9) were performed. Benign changes were predominant (86%), and their morphological structure was similar to those in adult patients. The results of scintygraphy, ultrasonography and blood thyroid hormone concentrations were analysed. A scheme of diagnostic-therapeutic management of thyroid gland tumours in children and adolescents was proposed.
