The correlation between oesophageal varices and portal gastropathy in the group of patients with liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension

Abstract
Background:The portal hypertension is common in the end stage liver disease and it deteriorates its prognosis.The serious symptoms of portal hypertension are oesophageal varices and portal gastropathy.The aim of the study was investigation of correlation between the size of oesophageal varices and the stage of portal gastropathy in the group of patients with liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension.Material/Methods:203 patients were admitted to hospital in years 1998 –2002 because of complications of liver cirrhosis. The oesophageal varices and portal gastropathy were diagnosed during the panendoscopy after admission to the hepatology ward.The oesophageal varices were classified according to the Paquet ’s Score and portal gastropathy according to the McCormic ’s Score.Due to the etiology of the liver cirrhosis the patients were divided into to 8 groups.HBV was diagnosed in 57/203 (28%),HCV in 64/203 (32%),HBV coinfected by HCV in 6/203 (3%),toxic liver damages in 19/203 (9%),PBC in 9/203 (4%),AIH 4/203 (2%),PSC 1/203 (
