Gastrectomy does not influence the levels of aminotransferases, total protein and albumin in humans – in reply

Abstract
Dear Editor,
We have found very interesting the opinion of Cengiz Beyan et al. regarding our work published in Medical Science Monitor. We are gratefull that our results evoked the discussion. In our experimental studies we tried to estimate the eventual influence of the large surgical gastrointestinal procedures on changes in the liver function and morphology. The results of liver function laboratory tests obtained by Cengiz Beyan et al. in 27 patients partially correspond with our findings. Both in humans as in an experimental rat model there were no significant differences between aminotransferases levels. Authors did not find any changes in total protein and albumin levels related to gastrectomy, which were evident in our study. This may be due to the differences in the material studied. Cengiz Beyan et al. described findings in 26 patients after partial gastrectomy, only one case followed total gastrectomy. In our experimental model total gastrectomy was performed in all studied cases. Total protein level was slightly decreased in one patient in their study (there is no information, if it was patient after partial or total gastrectomy).
Finally we fully agree that it is impossible simply compare the results obtained in an experimental model with human clinical findings. We offer results of our studies as a voice in the discussion. We would like also to congratulate the authors of the letter presented results.
