Pelvic infections in women, due to their possible complication (infertility, ectopic pregnancy) remain an important problem in gynaecological practice. In outpatients, the treatment of these conditions is limited as there are relatively few well tolerated oral preparations with a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity. On the other hand, a wide variety of bacterial starins causing infections often forces the clinicians to employ multidrug therapy. The treatment is expensive and troublesome for the patients as it requires repeated intramuscular or intravenous injections, which in turn necessitates admission to hospital. That is why doctors are seeking new drugs, highly effective and to be taken orally to allow the treatment on ambulatory basis. The results of our study of the antimicrobial ciprofloxacinehydrochloride for oral administration suggest that due to its efficacy (89%), very good tolerance by patients and convenient dosage (two times daily), the drug may significantly increase treatment modalities in pelvic infections in women.
