Abstract
The aim of this experimental study was to evaluate the possibilities of tracheal fragment transplantations or prosthesis implantation in rabbits. The following types of surgery were performed:
1. autotransplantation of the trachea - own tracheal fragments were implanted (10 rabbits)
2. tracheal transplantation - other rabbits tracheal fragments were prepared and implanted (15 animals)
3. implantation of dacron tracheal prosthesis (11 rabbits)
All operations were performed under general anesthesia with a local injection of a 1% lignocaine solution. Following surgery the animals received antibiotics. In cases where stenosis of implanted fragments occurred, the implanted region was replaced by a dacron prosthesis. The condition of the tracheal lumen was controlled endoscopically and specimens of tracheal junctions, implants and transplants were examined histopathologically. In most cases of autotransplantation and tracheal transplantations we observed no stenosis in the place of junctions , whereas degenerative lesions causing stenosis of the replaced fragments were observed 2 months following surgery.
