The actions of neuroendocrine hormones on immune functions have long been recognized. Recent discoveries, however, opened a much broader perspective, since not only hormones were found to act on the immune system, but immune mediators i.e. cytokines were shown to have effects on neuroendocrine functions. Thus, bidirectional links between the neuroendocrine and immune systems were found, and based on the sharing of receptors and mediators, the idea of the immune-neuroendocrine system has emerged. In this brief review we tried to make a synopsis of the most important aspects of the connections between these two systems.
