Abstract
The study involved 56 outpatients aged between 6 and 52 years with diagnosed giardiasis from The Infectious, Parasitic and Tropical Diseases Clinic of The Voivodship Specialistic Hospital in LódY. The diagnosis of parasitosis (gardiasis) was established as a result of a three-fold coproscopic examination and the coproimmunological test carried out by two independent diagnostic laboratories. The presence of Giardia trophozoites and cysts was detected in stool preparations which were fixed according to Schaudinn and stained by means of the Heidenhein method. The parasites GSA-65 antigen was detected in the stool of patients with the use of immunoenzymatic quantitative-qualitative EIA tests. Patients with diagnosed giardiasis were subjected to a five-day therapy with azithromycin (sumamed) administered once a day. Control examinations were carried out three times: 7-12, 30 and 60 days following the completion of therapy. The effectiveness of sumamed in controlling G. intestinal infections was found in 52 out of 56 treated patients regardless of the time of control. Sumamed is a drug of high effectiveness and good tolerance in the treatment of giardiasis in a dose, once a day for a period of five days.
