Sonographic evaluation of thymic size in children with infections or clinical symptoms of thymic hypertrophy in firs two years of life

Abstract
The study presents 41 children in whom thymic hypertrophy was diagnosed, including 37 cases in the course of infectious diseases and 4 with clinical symptoms suggesting thymic hypertrophy, such as: inspiratory dyspnea, restlessness, apnea attacks, vomiting. Thymic size was evaluated just after the diagnosis had been made and after glicocorticoid treatment. Statistically significant thymic regression by 73% was obtained. The threshold of thymic volume reduction that enabled discontinuation of hormonal treatment, was set to 60%.
