Abstract
The objective of this research was to evaluate how useful the estimation of PSA (total (t-PSA) and free (f-PSA) fractions) concentration in blood serum can be in screening prostate cancer in men who were not previously examined by a urologist. TPSA and fPSA concentrations were estimated in 444 volunteers at the 38-85 age range. Men (n=76) with tPSA concentrations in 'grey zone' and above were offered further urologic examination. Sextant method prostate biopsy was performed in 45 cases. 368 volunteers (83%) had tPSA concentration within physiological range, 51 volunteers (11.5%) had tPSA concentration in 'grey zone' and 25 volunteers (5.5%) had tPSA concentration above 10 ng/ml. 7 cases of prostate cancer were found. Expected percentage of detectability of prostate cancer in the population was 2.7%.
