Abstract

Magnesium deficiency has been suggested to be related to the mitral valve prolapse syndrome (MVPS).However, in numerous investigations, results of the magnesium content in blood serum in MVPS patients (pts) were divergent. In this study in the group of 50 pts with MVPS and in 30 healthy subjects (matched for age and gender) magnesium concentration was measured in blood plasma and simultaneously in haemolysates of red blood cells. The determination of the magnesium level was carried out on atomic absorption spectrophotometers. The arithmetic mean of plasma magnesium concentration was almost the same in the pts with MVPS and in the controls. In contrast, the magnesium concentration in haemolysates of erythrocytes was significantly lower (p<0.05) in the pts with MVPS (range: 1.02-2.55 mmol/l; mean=1.66±0.31 mmol/l) than in the control group (range: 1.55-2.71 mmol/l; mean=2.07±0.36 mmol/l). The present study revealed magnesium deficiency in red blood cells of the patients with MVPS.
