Abstract

This study is dedicated to a new method of curve analysis obtained by means of acoustic rhinometry measurements. It proposed a mathematical formula (fold-based model) describing rhinometric curves as a sum of components corresponding to anatomical nose cavity structures. We performed a numerical algorithm for the determination of the location, width and area of each fold. The method was tested on a control group and a set of curves including provocation results. The effectiveness of the method amounted to 95%. This method allowed much objective monitoring of processes related with the relief of nasal mucous membrane edema. The decomposition was particularly useful as a pre-processing method for the statistical evaluation of therapies and drugs.
