Abstract
12 patients with medullary sponge kidney subjected to control USG examinations were monitored for 5 years. 10 patients displayed a triad of USG symptoms typical of spongy kidney (nephrocalcinosis, fine cysts in renal medulla and fine calcifications within them). A frequent symptom was nephrocalcinosis which reflected recurrent chronic inflammatory processes. The suspicion of spongy kidney in USG was verified by urography. Plain films revealed calcifications in renal areas in the form of a bunch of flowers or mosaic, while after contrast injection lacunar, projections of renal calyxes filled with contrast were observed within renal papilla indenting to renal calyxes. The lesions were of stationary nature in 9 cases (75%), 3 patients (25%) displayed the intensification of lesions during long-term clinical observation. USG allows to establish preliminary diagnosis and it is a first-choice method in spongy kidney monitoring.
