Patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) or hepatitis Delta virus (HDV) infections may develop liver cirrhosis and primary liver carcinoma. We evaluated the mortality cases caused by acute viral hepatitis, cirrhosis and primary liver carcinoma in the district of Lublin between 1989-1995. During the period: 1989-1995 we observed 956 mortality cases; 62.4% due to cirrhosis, 29.9% due to liver carcinoma and 7.7% due to acute viral hepatitis. During this period the percentage of mortality cases due to acute viral hepatitis (14.7-10.3%), cirrhosis (14.7-11.9%) and liver carcinoma decreased (14.6-12.9%). We observed a decreased incidence of acute viral hepatitis type B infections. This may contribute to a decrease of mortality cases due to diseases, which may be a consequence of hepatitis viral infections.
