The latest data of presented views concerning biosynthesis, secretion and the activity of these hormones have been presented. The methods of their determination have also been described. The main emphasis has been put on the role of both polypeptides in the diagnosis and therapy. Among all the hormones of gastrointestinal tract, gastrin and somatostatin have attracted the interest of researchers for many years. Abundant literature on this subject has recently been supplemented by a number of significant hypotheses, opinions and study findings. The aim of the present article is to recapitulate the most important data concerning both hormones, with special reference to their role in the diagnostics and treatment of the diseases of gatsrointestinal tract.
