The opinion that segmental kidney arteries are anatomically terminal arteries has recently prevailed. 100 kidneys of 50 human fetuses had been examined by means of macro- and microanatomical methods. Interarterial junctions were noted in 10 per cent of cases and classified into three types: 1. intersegmental anastomosis, 2. interlobar anastomosis and 3. interarcuate anastomosis. A communicating vessel branched off a segmental artery with the same frequency (4%) as from an interlobar artery of adjacent segments (2%;). However, there was an anastomosis between arcuate arteries of adjacent segments.
